The Power of Storytelling

Storytelling is the oldest form of art in human history. We connect to one another, to ourselves, and to the universe through storytelling. It drives music, literature, philosophy, and community-building. Storytelling is powerful and transformational. When you have permission to own and share your story, you have a chance to impact others.

I love working with mission-driven businesses who have a passion for what they do and a genuine story and message to share. Like people, brands have lots of different creative outlets for sharing their stories and connecting with their audiences. They can harness the power of storytelling in traditional print, radio, television, email, social media, videos, blog posts, and community events.

In all its different forms, storytelling starts with an experience, an idea, and an outline. Before you can get to where you want to go with your story, you need a plan to help you navigate it.

What’s your story, and what’s the best way to share it? What drives and inspires you, and how can your brand communicate that? What is your Why, and how can you honor it?

The Book Cover That Catches Your Eye

Once you have your goalpost (a plan, a strategy, a campaign), you need the visuals that will draw people in and the words that will keep them around.

When you walk through a library or a book store, you’re drawn to the book cover that first catches your eye, before you know anything about the author or the book. The more you inspect the book, the more you notice. You see little details that interest you, you start to understand the story being told and the feelings that the book evokes, and you get a sense that you can relate to the author on a deep level.

Your brand visuals matter. They make up someone’s first impression of you and create the first opportunity for connection. But they’re more than just a first impression. Your graphics and brand visuals say a lot about you. They draw in the right audience and create a sense of resonance and connection with them before they read or listen to your story.

Your graphics can also be interactive, creating a deeper opportunity for connection. This can be done through brand collateral, like postcards, digital wallpapers, bookmarks, even branded word search or crossword puzzles. Marketing graphics can be more than just flyers and ads.

The Words That Keep You Enthralled

The cover of a book will catch your eye and get you to pick it up, but it’s the story inside that enthralls you and keeps your attention. Once people are drawn in by your visuals, you need a message or a story that resonates with them. This is what helps your audience connect to you and what keeps them coming back.

It’s not just what you say but how you say it. A good story is true, relatable, and inspiring. It connects people to a truth about you, themselves, or life overall. People can see themselves in the story, the characters, and the lessons. They leave inspired to see things differently or take some kind of action.

A good story is what makes your message powerful, and good copywriting is the vehicle you use to tell your story. It captivatingly and clearly communicates who you are, why your audience should do business with you, and what you want them to do.

There are lots of different ways to share your message and story, from press releases, media advisories, and interviews, to email blasts, web content, and social media captions, to ad copy and promotional video and radio scripts.
